A toilet that will not stop running can waste a tankful of water a day, and one that will not flush becomes urgent within hours in a family house. The good news is that most faults live inside the cistern, where the parts are cheap and reachable. We find the cause, repair or replace the worn parts there and then where possible, and leave the bathroom as we found it, minus the problem.
What you can expect
- Running cisterns and trickling pans stopped
- Weak flushes and slow refills fixed
- Leaks at the pan, cistern and connections sealed
- Parts replaced on the spot where possible
- Old parts taken away, work area left clean
The faults we see every week
A cistern that never stops filling points to the filler valve, either scaled up or worn past sealing. Water trickling into the pan between flushes means the flush valve or syphon no longer seals, so the cistern quietly empties and tops itself back up. Weak flushes come from water levels set too low or a partly blocked flush mechanism, and leaks at the back of the pan are usually the pan connector rather than the toilet itself. Loose buttons and handles are the easy wins, usually a worn linkage.
How the repair goes
We turn off the supply at the isolation valve, open the cistern and work out which part has failed. Washers, valves, syphons and flush fittings go back on new where worn, the water level gets set properly rather than left wherever it was, and we test several flushes and refills before packing up. Concealed cisterns behind furniture come out through their access panel, and the same parts apply inside. Anything beyond a straightforward repair gets quoted before we proceed.
Repair or replace the toilet?
Nearly every internal part of a toilet can be replaced, so a sound ceramic pan is worth keeping. Replacement makes sense when the cistern or pan is cracked, when fittings are so old that spares no longer exist, or when you want the bathroom updated anyway. We fit new close-coupled, back-to-wall and wall-hung toilets as well, and take the old unit away. Either way, you get the state of play in plain words before any money is spent.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my toilet keep running after a flush?
The flush valve or syphon is not sealing, so the cistern refills endlessly; it is a common and usually quick repair.
Why is my flush so weak?
Often the water level in the cistern is set too low, or the flush mechanism is partly blocked.
