Will it work with your heating?
Most combi boiler setups take a smart thermostat without fuss: the old thermostat comes off the wall and the new unit and its receiver go on. Systems with a hot water cylinder, or wired as Y or S plan, need the receiver wired into the controls centre, which is a job for someone who knows what each wire does. Some boilers also support OpenTherm or eBUS connections, which unlock extras such as modulating control. We check what you have before you order anything.
What happens on the day
We isolate the controls wiring, remove the old stat and mount the new thermostat and receiver where they make sense. The app goes on, the account connects to your Wi-Fi, and we build a first schedule together: wake, leave, return, sleep, adjusted around how your household actually lives. With a cylinder, hot water gets its own schedule. Before we leave, you change a setting yourself and put it back, so the phone controls are not a mystery.
What a smart thermostat will not do
It will not repair a struggling boiler or shift sludge; a system with faults stays a system with faults, just a better dressed one. It will not fix badly balanced radiators either, so the hallway may still lag behind the lounge. What it does do is stop heating an empty house and make changes to your routine painless, which is where most of the gas saving actually comes from.
